Motorcycle riders should wear helmets

Several states that had given in to pressure from motorcyclists to make wearing helmets optional are giving the issue second thoughts. The reason shouldn’t be surprising. The number of deaths of motorcyclists has soared while other highway deaths have declined.

There were 2,116 motorcyclist deaths in 1997, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In 2005 there were 4,553.

Granted, the number of motorcyclists has increased, but not enough to explain the nearly 100 percent increase in the number of deaths.

This was not supposed to happen. Motorcyclists had told lawmakers that education and training would be a far better method for reducing the number of deaths and injuries than wearing helmets.

Apparently the education and training has been woefully ineffective.
